Home is where the heart shows

Home is meant to be our safe place—the one spot we can truly relax and be ourselves. And that’s a good thing. It’s healthy to be able to let our guard down with the people we love most. But sometimes, when we’re tired or stretched thin, and frustrations grow we can snap, speak too quickly, or react in ways we wouldn’t outside the safety of our own home.

James gives us some gentle wisdom for moments like these:

“Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry”.

(James 1:19, NLT)

It’s a verse that calls us to pause, breathe, and let the Spirit guide our reactions—especially at home, where our true selves show.

As we lead up to Mother’s Day, whether you’re a mum or thinking of your mum, it’s a great time to reflect on how we can be peacemakers in our families. Not perfect, not always polished—but prayerful, patient, and present. The fruit of the Spirit — “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23, NLT) — grows in the everyday moments, the regular interactions.

This week, consider asking God to help you be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry—especially with those who matter most. Invite the Holy Spirit to grow His fruit in you, so our homes become places where love isn’t just spoken, but experienced. Because the way we love in the ordinary moments can speak volumes—and reflect the heart of Jesus, the One who loved us first.
