The wisdom that comes from above
Most of us have felt the ache of conflict handled badly. Words spoken too quickly. Motives misunderstood. Walls slowly built. We know there must be a better way.
The good news is, God has not left us guessing about what that better way looks like. He speaks directly into this very need through the words of James, in a letter written to believers navigating real-life pressures and conflict:
“But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace-loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favouritism and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.”
James 3:17-18 NLT
When conflict arises, we have a choice about which wisdom will guide us. The wisdom of the world urges us to protect our image, win the argument, secure our position, or quietly withdraw. It tells us that strength looks like dominance, or that peace means avoiding the issue altogether.
But James directs us to another source, the wisdom that comes from above.
This wisdom is not driven by pride or fear. It is pure, shaped by a desire to honour God rather than defend ourselves. It begins with humbly examining our own hearts, getting the log out of our own eye before addressing the speck in someone else’s (Matthew 7:5). It is peace-loving, seeking restored relationships rather than personal victory. It is gentle and willing to yield, not weak or compromising truth, but secure enough in Christ to listen, to learn and to lay down our rights when needed. It is full of mercy and good fruit, moving toward others with compassion and practical love. It is impartial and sincere, free from hidden agendas or favouritism.
This is the wisdom that comes from above. It is the wisdom formed in us as we draw near to Christ and allow his Spirit to shape our hearts. It does not make us peace-fakers who avoid hard conversations, nor peace-breakers who inflame them. Instead, it forms us into true peacemakers who step into conflict with humility, courage and grace.
As we abide in Jesus, the Prince of Peace, asking for his wisdom and staying close to his heart, he plants seeds of peace through us. We can trust that in his timing, he is able to bring a harvest of righteousness in our relationships, for his glory.
