The destruction of hatred

Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.

James 1:20 (NLT)

Hatred destroys. We see it played out in tragic ways all around us. In racism that divides communities and in wars that devastate nations. Today the world watches the horrors of Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza, where cycles of violence and revenge consume lives. These conflicts remind us that unchecked hatred never brings peace, only more destruction.

The Bible acknowledges anger, but also warns us. There is a difference between righteous anger and destructive anger. Righteous anger responds to injustice, abuse, or cruelty with a desire for what is right before God. It moves us to protect the vulnerable and confront evil. Jesus Himself displayed this in the temple when He overturned the tables of exploitation. But destructive anger, when allowed to fester, mutates into hatred. It seeks vengeance rather than justice, tearing down rather than building up.

James tells us clearly: human anger does not produce God’s righteousness. The only way hatred is overcome is through God’s love at work in us. Jesus said,

“Love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you”.

Matthew 5:44, NLT

These words feel impossible in the face of racism or war, but they reveal the only true path to peace. Hatred may seem powerful, but love rooted in Christ is stronger still.

The cross is God’s answer to hatred. In Jesus, He absorbed the world’s violence and offered forgiveness and justice instead of retaliation and vengeance. He broke down dividing walls of hostility (Ephesians 2:14). When we surrender our anger to Him, He transforms it into a force for reconciliation and justice that heals rather than destroys.
